I have been on my current job for 7 months. It is a nice salon and spa, but the owner does nothing to promote it. She has even removed her yellow pages ad.  It has become more of a social club for her friends from church. Most of the spa business is from gift certificates, very little from regular clients, though it has picked up from that area some. The boss's idea of promoting me is for me to give out my cards with discounted services, then I take the hit on the discount, she gets her whole perceneforum.xxxe. I am the longest running MT she has ever had. The life span of a receptionist is about 2 months, stylists come and go constantly. She will also call in another MT that works at another salon if someone asks for her. I don't think this is fair at all. My paycheck gets smaller every time. She has no loyalty to any of her employees.My dilemna.........I took a job one day a week at a spa 25 miles away. Turns out that the woman tht sold the spa there is now working at the salon where I work. She is crying that she was screwed over on the sale of her place. I find this very hard to believe, as the gentleman that bought the place is a  successful, well thought of businessman, the best friend of my current boss. The woman offered me a place when she owned it, renting the room at an exhorbitant rate, then still taking 50% of what I brought in, and was insulted when I turned it down. I only spoke to her on the phone, we have never met face to face. The spa manager said I should just keep it to myself, since I will be only working on the day that my current job is closed. I don't think it is anyone's business what I do on my days off.Second dilemna.........I was offerd a job at a competing salon, right down the road. It would be on call, because they currently do not have that much massage business. The owner of this place promotes like mad, has a huge yellow pages ad, and will get whatever her people need to make the place a success. It has been there a year, and has already shown a huge profit. That is unheard of around here.  A stylist that left my salon is working there, making 3x what she was making when she worked with me. Again, this would not interfere with my primary job, and I would NEVER try to take clients away from there. I think my current boss would have an aneurysm if she found out.Any advice?

Second dilemna.........I was offerd a job at a competing salon, right down the road. It would be on call, because they currently do not have that much massage business. The owner of this place promotes like mad, has a huge yellow pages ad, and will get whatever her people need to make the place a success. Again, this would not interfere with my primary job, and I would NEVER try to take clients away from there.

Why not pursue a committment from the owner you've described in the second dilemma?  Ask her what it would take for her to bring you in full-time and then start putting your energies into making that happen.    Don't you deserve to work in an atmosphere where the owner respects and values you?  A place where the salon and staff is promoted and is obviously successful sure sounds better than what you've described as your current working conditions.  

I think my current boss would have an aneurysm if she found out.

I would encourage you to stop beating your head against the proverbial wall of your current boss!!

I definitely think you sound very loyal. Too loyal to an owner who does not treat you fairly. I'd be arranging a talk with that new salon owner & try to set up my entire business over there. Are you in a contract? (those things can be enforced, so do it all wisely & cleanly - all business, no emotional tirades). I think you deserve better too.Jill/sagetherapist

I think the problem has solved itself. I went to  the competing salon today and found out the woman is a total idiot. She cannot keep a massage therapist there over a week because she has a nasty habit of not paying them.  She asked me all kinds of personal and illegal questions, and got real edgy when I mentioned that I knew her last 2 MTs. She asked me if I knew any other MTs in town, and I thought that was odd. I spoke to both of them, one a good friend, and she told me she had to threaten the woman to get paid for the only 2 massages she did there. My esthetician friend that gave her my number was not aware of this, I am sure. She asked me what my husbnd did, and got real snotty when I told her he was a tattoo artist.  She also asked me what church I went to, absolutely NONE of her business. Then she started talking about me doing waxing and several other things I am not trained to do. She has a perfectly good esthetician to do waxing and stuff. I think she is going to be disappointed with all the talking she did to me abut how wonderful this woman is. I had a long talk with my current employer, and she agreed to try and make things better. She is apparently tired of losing employees, and says that she sees she need to improve. It remains to be seen if she actualy will.

The called me from the other salon yesterday. I was not busy, so I went and did a massage. Sure enough, when it came time to get paid,it was "Mom had to run home for an hour or so, she said to wait and she will pay you when she gets back." I was not about to sit around that place for an hour when I could be working.  I told the daughter "when I come through that door, I make $30 an hour with a 30 minute minimum, 30 minute increments.  If I stay for 30 minutes, you will owe me an additional $15. If I stay 31 minutes, you will owe me an additional $30. " She paid me.

this is absolutely wrong. if she offers the discount, it should come off her end of the deal.

I am glad to say that things have actually gotten better at my primary job. I still do a few massages at the second place, the woman is still a complete idiot, but has not balked at paying me again.
