Why do some women introduce themselves as a 'Single Mom'?

Are they looking for sympathy or a date? I get so annoyed when I hear people say this. "Hi, my name is ____, and I'm a single mom." That sounds so BAD! don't you think? Take the 'mom' part off and listen to the same line- "Hi, my name is ____, and I'm single". Would people really introduce themselves like that? And, I would think that 'single mom' part sounds like Angel Bells to child predators. How can we get women to STOP introducing themselves in this way? Or do you think it's fine?.
Most people I have heard say this have NOT been married, and have NO accomplishments to speak of, besides being a mom...

I think I just don't care one way or the other.

Whenever someone has introduced themselves as a single mom to me, it has never come off as desperate.

Because it's an honest and efficient way to say who you are ?
In two words you say, you have been married, have a child but are 'available' or free again.
If you want to get into a new relationship, these facts are going to come out, like it or not.
Thanks to the answer above : it also says that you're independently taking care of a child, which is no mean feat.
