Why, oh why, won't he call? (re: Interview)

I had an excellent interview to become a massage instructor. I met with the Director of Education and we totally hit it off. He like my experience, he loved my business background, and everything went much better than I had hoped. And I loved everything about the school.

He had me come back two days later to do a demo lecture for him and another instructor. I blew them away. Not to sound like I have a huge ego, but really -- their jaws were hanging open and he couldn't stop gushing about what a great addition I would be to their team, that he wanted me to teach their business class, or even teach on a contractor basis if I didn't want to be there every day. The only problem is that they were offering much, much less in terms of compensation than I'd expected. So he said he'd talk to his VP that afternoon and really fight to get me what I wanted. His exact words were, "I'm really going to fight for you!" He took copies of my I-9 documents and said he'd call me later that day or the following day. We even had a tentative start date, assuming the money issue could be resolved.

Guess what! I haven't heard back from him. I've left three messages over the course of the last week and a half, asking that he call to let me know if I was still being considered or if they'd filled the position. And I can't get the guy to call me. Today, I called the other instructor to see if the position had been filled, and she hasn't returned my call, either.

Seriously. What's up with this. I'm not lying when I say everything went perfectly. I was supposed to start next Monday. So why won't he call? And how do I continue to follow-up to get closure on this without making a nuisance of myself? I badly want this job, but at the very least want them to set me free so that I can move on if they don't want me. I refuse to believe that his lack of response is a passive-aggressive "thanks but no thanks." Not acceptable.

Thanks for any advice. Part of me wants to just show up for work on Monday, George Costanza style.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. IMO, if they still wanted you for that position, they would have returned your calls. My guess is you'll be receiving a rejection letter in the mail any day now. My brother actually had an identical experience, although the interview was for a job in computer support. The interviewer loved him, but the compensation was too low for him to accept. So she said, "I'm going to talk to my boss right now, and I'm going to fight for a higher salary for this position. You're the most qualified person I've interviewed. We definitely want you for this job!" A few days later, he got a rejection letter in the mail. Sadly, at many massage schools, the people who do the interviewing are rarely the ones who control staff salaries; and the people who are in charge of the money often don't care who gets hired, so long as it's within budget. (This is especially true at the chain schools).

My advice is to contact other massage schools in your area for potential job openings. Eventually, you'll find one that's a good fit (with people who will pay you what you're worth AND return your calls!)

Until then, you don't need them to "set you free." You can do that yourself, anytime! I empathize with your disappointment, though. It's no fun having your hopes raised & dashed like that.

That REALLY STINKS!

The complete cowardice, rudeness, not to mention unprofessionalism is SO FRUSTRATING.
I can totally see you jumping out from behind a car in their parking lot, grabbing the guy by the collar, and yelling, "just say it, you coward!!!". I, myself, have had fantasies like that.......

I agree, new shoes, and perhaps a really expensive new lipstick would be nice and helpful.
