Hi Guys,

About a month ago a massage therapist friend of mine recommended a book to me by a lady who had built up over 3000 clients in her career.

Of course I was skeptical but I checked it out anyway and since then I've applied only a few of the strategies.

The classified ad strategy that she shares has noticably had my phone ringing more than usual just by making a few small but important changes to my ads.

Anyway, I'm still very early in my career but so far so good. Just thought I'd share it in case anyone's interested. I've already made back the purchase price many times over.

The website is:

http://www.massagemarketingmagic.com

All the best!

This forum is great. Thanks to all you experienced guys for your input. It's really great support for us newbies!

Cheers

So, are you going to give us some helpful hints or do you just want us to buy the book?Let us know. ย :)

3000 clients, whew. I wonder how reasonable that is? My whole town doesn't have that many citizens ย  :D

Ok so, I have been looking at all the marketing programs/books/etc. out there for one that I thought might work for me. I ordered one- didn't like it and got my money back. More than wasting my money I HATE wasting my time. I had come across this one before-looked interesting but didn't order because I chose the other one and also because I dont like to download stuff (already crashed one computer that way) Anyway, even though this looked like total spam, being a first post and all, decided to look anyway.Long story short.. Ordered it, read it all in one sitting ( forgot to make lunch for my daughter :-[) and I am very impressed! It's exactly my style and what i've been looking for. Simple, specific ideas with examples ( a big plus for me ) and it helps you make an actual plan to implement your ideas. Very good for me because I have a hard time focusing on ideas over a longer period of time.So I would definetly recommend it. I think there was a guarantee, but I usually figure my visa card will handle that if they don't. Just remember that whats good for me may not be quite your thing... in other words don't get ย upset with me if you try it and don't like it. Everyone has different ย preferences.Kirstenedited to include...p.s. I'm not looking for 3000 clients. Just 10 good ones that will actually refer others! ย

Hi Kirsten,

Whew! Glad you liked the e-book. My intention in recommending it as a post here was only to share what I think is a valuable resource, not to spam.

As I'm only a new therapist (just graduated a few months ago) I don't yet have many proven marketing ideas of my own but as I've already been getting results using Amy's strategies, I thought I'd mention her book so that others might also benefit.

Anyway, I only found out about it after reading an interview she gave in my friend's newsletter last month, which had a link to her site.

That's where I got the 3000 clients 'fact' from. Apparently she also is a keynote speaker at massage association conventions throughout the world.

If you (or anyone) are interested in reading the newsletter/ interview, the download link is below.

http://www.megafilehosting.com/huna/newsletter.pdf

The interview is on page 9.

Anyway, I look forward to sharing those marketing ideas that work best for me down here in Australia, in future posts.

I don't know about 3000 clients, I myself would be happy with just a steady stream of regulars!

All the best!

Stacey

Quick question - Did you download the book using a high speed connection or a dial-up? ย I'm thinking about trying it but have had trouble in the past with downloads using my dial-up service. ย Just wondering how it worked for you.

3000 Clients

Hi, I'm on dial up and downloaded the e-book(s) no problem. There are 2 PDF files, so their size is compressed somewhat making for faster download.By memory I think it only took a few minutes.CheersStacey

Eh, I don't really like the website, and can't stand ebooks. I don't think I'm willing to invest that much money (I know it's not much) in something I can't get unbiased reviews on before I buy it. Why don't people just publish books anymore?

I got the ebook for free as a trial for Amy, she is awesome, and I really liked her advice as well, she is down to earth and most of her ideas are very cost savy, that is always a plus for me! ย I would do it! ย But I also like http://www.bodyworkbiz.com, great site for bodyworkers. ย Sign up for the free newsletter, you get a new marketing tip every month. ;D

3000 Clients

If anyone here knows Amy personally, would you mind asking if she'd be interested in making a hard copy and selling it? I just really don't like e-books. I hate having to stare at a computer screen all day at work, and when I get an ebook, I usually end up printing it out anyway. But when I pay for the book, it's paying for the material, THEN I have to pay for all my paper and ink. Would be better just to buy a hard copy.

Well, recycle your ink carts at OfficeMax and get free paper. ย I have mixed feelings about Eric Brown's bodyworkbiz. ย A lot of vague ideas, etc. ย The monthly newsletters are usually some of the same stuff you get if you buy the 101 day things. ย Lately it has been "hurry and sign up for the chair massage conference!!!".If the 3000 client lady had the book published, not many would kick out $50 for it, plus her profit would shrink so much that she'd have to charge even more for it, thus selling even fewer copies. ย I'd too like to see some examples, not just reading the same paragraph over and over and over on her website. ย I do apologize if I seem grumpy this morning. ย mick

I agree with Mick regarding the questionable benefit of Eric Brown's newsletter. ย Vague and salesy...

However, as a big fan of free marketing tips, I would highly recommend the newsletters put out by Todd Brown, Colleen Steigerwald Holloway and Daryl Kulak.

Hi JD,Thanks for those sites.I'm going to order the Mega-Success system by Todd Brown so I'll let you all know what it's like. Also, I placed an ad in my local newspaper yesterday, and I based it on one I saw in Amy's e-book - http://www.massagemarketingmagic.com . The same one that she says really got her phone ringing and so far I've gotten 6 bookings out of it in just 24 hours. Hopefully I can convert them to regular clients.I targeted the add solely to stressed out professional women in my area (I live in Sydney), who need and can afford to come for deep tissue massage. This is one thing that Amy teaches, that you need to target each piece of marketing to a specific audience and speak directly to their needs/wants as opposed to just marketing to anyone and everyone in the same ad.She seems to really know her stuff. She's approachable to. If you email her she gets right back to you and also onceyou get on her mailing list, she sends you regular emails with great tips and suggestions for building your massagebusiness. I believe that she truly wants therapists to succeed. So far I'm feeling like I got good value for my $50 bucks. ย Anyway, I'll let you know about Todd's system. I wasn't going to get it cause it's getting up there in price - $150 for the basic version which is $200 in Aussie dollars for me, but I thought what the heck, if I'm going to make a career out this, then I need to know all I can about how to get clients from people who've already been successful. I've already 'invested' so much to get this far and can't afford to fail. Plus there is a guarantee.I wish they had taught me this 'marketing' stuff in college though!CheersStacey

Sounds like it's going to be another inspirational thing like the bodyworkbiz ebooks. He tells the same thing, to get a target market, which is what any marketing course, book, or class is going to tell you. Did she also say to include some type of discount in the ad that is generating 6 clients per day? If I wouldn't get sued by Eric Brown, I'd probably post up the info he says to put in ads. Most of the stuff in any type of marketing course I've looked at is like what Mick said, really vague. I should have made my living making marketing materials for MTs! lol "Your business is like a patient..." ;)[/quote]

To be honest, many of us massage marketing experts have gone the route of ebooks and ecourses so that we can get the massage marketing book or product to the buyer faster.

Add in the shipping costs (based on the printed out book's weight which would probably wire bound or put into a 3 ring binder to be more professional in its appearance) and printing costs...well, it would be even more expensive to purchase.

As far as I know, every one us, including Amy Roberts, Todd Brown, and Eric Brown all offer some form of money back guarantee if you are not satisfied with the product.

Hope this helps,

Michael Humphreys

Quote:I might offer say an extra 30 minutes for the first 5 people to book in for a 60 minute treatment. So even though they would actually be getting a 90 minute treatment, it wouldn't come across as a 'discount' per se but rather as a 'bonus' and we all know that corporate types love their bonuses! So as opposed to offering discounts, I think I'll keep my prices higher than everyone else and justify the higher price by adding more 'value' to the treatment and see how it goes as a marketing strategy in my area.More cash per client, less turn around times, cleaning of linen etc.Actually, does anyone have any suggestions of how to add more value to your treatments without necessarily giving just extra time?Would love to hear thoughts on this?CheersStacey

As for the first 5 to book type of thing, I never really had much luck with that, your mileage may vary. I was wondering why people didn't JUMP at the chance to be the first 5 callers to book. But then I thought about it... when a radio station says that caller number 9 wins such and such prize, when you hear that, do you call? Or do you usually assume that they've already got 9 people calling in by the time you dial the number? I see it as the latter, so I never call. But why not extend that offer to everyone? First-time clients get a free 30 minutes to their massage, either to use on THAT treatment (making it a 90-minute treatment) or for their NEXT booking, only pay for a 30-minute treatment while getting a full hour? I've had more luck with that, and you get to see them twice (which will usually lead to more).

While keeping your prices higher and adding more value to your service, this will probably not get you a ton of clients. People are usually pretty stingy with their money, whether they're well-to-do or not. That's probably how they got into the financial situation they're in, by not splurging at every chance they get. You may get plenty of clients and not have to do as many massages, clean linens, etc, which is great, but quantity is not the goal when you keep your prices high, and you pretty much HAVE to get them to rebook, which means busting your bum in other ways. This also could mean lots of advertising. Either way, it's a lot of work.

As for adding more value besides adding more time, it's just that, value. Make sure you give the BEST massage in your area, and make your clients KNOW you give the best. This isn't so much as just the massage, but the atmosphere as well. Working from home usually isn't percieved as having much value, even if your office is seperate from your main living area of your home. People spending top-dollar for their massage are wanting a top-dollar experience, which is why spas so easily charge really high prices. It's all about the atmosphere. How many people do you know will pay for a $130 massage at a top-notch spa, when they don't even know if the therapist is any good? Do you think they'd pay the same amount from someone working in a chiropractic clinic? We'd like to hope so, but truth is, they wouldn't.

Well, I'm at my other job and just got a call, and lost my entire train of thought. I'll try to continue tomorrow when my head is clear; hope this helps!

Hey Stacey!Well, the way I charge more, and not have to do more time is: ุขย I charge more for a deep tissue, this is common, but good cause I am using more of myself, Aromatherapy, reflexology, or special foot scrub (women especially love this in the summer months, it feels like a mini-pedicure!) ุขย I also offer mini facials, like a mask and mosturize, (to which I also sell the products, they are awesome and not MLM!!) ุขย so that generates extra income as well and cost me a one time fee of $90! ุขย I hope these help, I have more but too much to list, email if you are interested!

Ahh, the voice of experience. Point well taken!I'm currently working from my home. Fortunately my treatment room is the only room that is close to the front door, so I greet my clients at the door and take them straight in, without having to take them through my house.Anyway, the point I'm getting at is that I don't have to pay a second lot of rent to run my massage business, which has made it a lot easier starting out.I think ultimately I would like to set up some kind of clinic nearby, but I want to build up a base of clients first. In regards to my ad, yeah the response has been great. I've gotten 3 more bookings out of it, but I think that will be all from that ad as it is a paper that is delivered daily.Anyway, I think the reason that I got a good result from the ad is because I have lived in this area for many years and I have gotten to know the types of people who live here.I live just outside of Sydney in a nice area that over the last few years has become quite up-market (it used to be more 'average'). Also, when I did a search on the Australian Bureau of Statistics to work out the demographics of the area, I discovered that there were a lot professional people both men and women who earn quite a bit more than the average salary. So I decided to target the ad to stressed out professional women specifically so I would come across more specialized and would therefore be able to charge a slightly higher price (just a theory).I even thought people might see the higher price and associate that with the 'quality' of my treatments, but I don't know if that worked. I'll be sure to ask my clients what it was that got them to call. But at the end of the day I got 9 bookings out of it, so something worked. I'll run it again next week and see how it goes. As more of an incentive, I might offer say an extra 30 minutes for the first 5 people to book in for a 60 minute treatment. Higher rates than everyone else, and 6 calls in a 24-hour period from print advertising. Wow, sounds like you have a very receptive area. Mind if I move there? lolPersonally, I don't really think I want 3,000 clients. That's seeing 8 clients a day, every day of the year, with each client only coming in once a year. I'm sure resort spas see that kind of stuff all the time, but personally I'd rather have those clients that keep coming back once every week or two. You're right, offering discounts can work against you, depending on how much of a discount you offer. If you are offering a $5 off special, nobody is going to bock at $5 when the price goes up to regular fee (depending on how many times you give them the $5 off). If you offer $15, it's much more of a jump to going full price. Now, if you're in a tight spot and need some quick cash, by all means discount. The only way I was able to make it through the summer last year during my first 2 months of opening my office, I had to discount my services a lot, but it allowed me to pay for paper, printer, ink, rent, decor, and other things necessary to run my business. Heh, sometimes I was even able to afford groceries! You just have to think about it ahead of time though, a small discount as an incentive is not going to make your business go crumbling down, but can really help in getting your name out there.

Hi Seforum.xxxgnant,No, I'm not offering any discounts in my ads, actually I've probably gone the other way by charging more than the average therapist in my area. In fact most of the marketing info I've come across so far says that discounts aren't a good thing because you end up attracting clients who'll always want a discount or worse still, they'll consider a massage with you to only be worth the discounted price and 'buck' when you go to raise your prices.Stuff that! I only want clients who value my time and energy. Anyway, if you're happy with the amount of clients you have and things are going great, I'd say don't bother buying the e-book. But if you're not or if you're simply just curious, I'd say just buy it and see for yourself whether there's anything new in it that you could try. I'd be keen to hear your thoughts! If you don't like it, just ask for a refund. As I understand it, anything bought through ClickBank is instantly refundable. Here's a thought, if everybody is saying the same 'vague' things, maybe we can put all this marketing stuff together, put a different 'spin' on it and go into the massage marketing 'guru' business together? Looks pretty lucrative don't ya think? LOL - Nah, just kidding! Stacey ;D

I should have made my living making marketing materials for MTs! lol "Your business is like a patient..."

ย mick

Eh, I don't really like the website, and can't stand ebooks. I don't think I'm willing to invest that much money (I know it's not much) in something I can't get unbiased reviews on before I buy it. Why don't people just publish books anymore?

Hi Kirsten,

Stacey

Just remember that whats good for me may not be quite your thing... in other words don't get ุขย upset with me if you try it and don't like it. Everyone has different ุขย preferences.Kirstenedited to include...p.s. I'm not looking for 3000 clients. Just 10 good ones that will actually refer others! ุขย

3000 Clients
ย

All the best!

This forum is great. Thanks to all you experienced guys for your input. It's really great support for us newbies!

Cheers

3000 Clients

Stacey ;D

3000 Clients

3000 Clients

3000 Clients

Hey Stacey!Well, the way I charge more, and not have to do more time is: ย I charge more for a deep tissue, this is common, but good cause I am using more of myself, Aromatherapy, reflexology, or special foot scrub (women especially love this in the summer months, it feels like a mini-pedicure!) ย I also offer mini facials, like a mask and mosturize, (to which I also sell the products, they are awesome and not MLM!!) ย so that generates extra income as well and cost me a one time fee of $90! ย I hope these help, I have more but too much to list, email if you are interested!

Hmmm, marketing sites pitching "their" ideas as the only tool ย that will increase "your" business--that's an orginal concept. The board that we are presently on has tons of information available at no cost to you. ย Not only can you find information about what works/doesnt work in marketing and sales, you get the support of the members on this board. ย So, before you spends hundreds of dollars on a pitch, make sure you mine this site for all of its treasures. ;D
