I had a treatment with a larger lady, and sadly got to say she damaged my portable plinth, the middle of the bed (legs are totally bent). I am wondering how you would approach this, as for it to not, happen again. I still want to be professional without saying I am sorry you are slightly too heavy for the plnth to cope. I would never do this, but wondering how I would approach this.

The bed was not cheap, £200.00, first time this has happened, beliveve me never want to go there again.

I think you should get in touch with the couch manufacturers as these should be able to take larger people. There is also a possible health and safety issue.

I agree. I would check the couch manual to see what the maximum load is meant to be. If you think your client did not exceed this, then I would phone the manufacturers asap.

Most couches have a maximum weight, if one of your clients exceeds the maximum weight, I believe you have to say something, either that or you keep on buying couches. Being honest doesn't mean your aren't being professional.

If I had a very overweight client, there is no way I would treat them on my couch as they would break it. With spiritual healing you can also treat people on a chair and I would suggest the chair instead.

Is there no other way of treating people you think are too big for your plinth? What is a plinth by the way?

I completely agree. There are alternatives depending on the therapy, a chair, as Rosi suggests, and also a futon or a cushioned mat as used in Shiatsu.

I have a portable couch/plinth that I bought when I lived the USA in the early 90's - it is wooden with a 6 inch foam cover. It has a maximum safe load of 20 stone. If I am the least bit concerned about someones weight, I ask them during the consult - if over 19 stone I decline treatment. As a therapist I would not want to damage either myself, my couch or the client should there be a failure in the couch. Those few people I have had to decline have always been understanding, and have generally made an effort to eat healthily, and invariably come back after several months having lost weight. A couple have not, but it was obvious that they wanted someone else to take responsibility for their care - which is not within my remit, and I recommended they seek help elsewhere.

How can you put this across without offending someone?, the treatment was for facial therapy, which does make it awkward doing without using it. I have to say that the lady was American who tend to sue for anything. I am concerned for my insurance.

plynth is a beauty term, another word for couch.

I don't have the documents for the couch, I have had the couch for about four years. I am now being extra precautions about my bed, that is now being fixed by a black smith, it will never be the same, but at least it be stronger. I have also went round checking every nut and bolt, making sure it is safe. I never want this happen again, very embarassing for myself, and client.

SH, sorry to hear about the mishap. Indeed quite embarrassing. Is having a foldable bed for heavy clients an option? Then if you have a client that would not fit on the couch, you can say something like "I think working on a bed woudl be more comfortable, just a minute, I will bring it out".

As Azalia said, futons don't have this problem!

i have had upto around 24 stone on mine no probs and its an inch wider than standard all the way around....

I have the sort of couch that has a cable support structure and one of my more 'sturdily built' male clients broke a cable last year. I phoned the suppliers to see if I could get a replacement cable and they delivered a new couch within three days, so if you can get hold of the suppliers they may help you....

You mentioned insurance. My insurance does cover me for my equipment so it might be worth giving your insurance company a call to check this out.
