Are you *required* to bleach your linens?

As I was taking the jurisprudence exam a couple of months ago, as part of applying for our new massage establishment license, I learned that in Texas, we are *required* to use chlorinated water" to wash our "towels" (no mention of sheets lol).

I hate bleach. It stinks, it ruins linens (towels and sheets alike!), and it is carcinogenic. I hate using it, breathing it, and using items washed with it.

But it is technically the law-- I *must* bleach our sheets.

I am wondering if there's some way to fulfill the State's requirements, without having to actually USE bleach in every washload. Any ideas?

I would look into non-chlorine/bleach laundry disinfectant. My sister-in-law uses cloth diapers for her baby and usually adds a little hydrogen peroxide to her wash loads since she doesn't like bleach- it makes her feel sick- and it's still a disinfectant.

I've also heard that pine-oil based cleaners are disinfecting too (such as pine-sol) that you can add to your laundry. I don't know if it's true, just what I've heard, and you could even make your own laundry soap if you can buy pure pine-oil.

Either way though, I'd check with your licensing agency to get some clarification (whether it's just towels or you sheets as well, if you have to bleach EVERY load or just once per x amount of time, or if you can use alternative methods to sterilize). Good luck!

To me that reads use clean water to wash your sheets, most tap water is chlorinated if you live in a city. Does it say add bleach, or certain ratios. I would add one teeny tiny drop. Also who is checking? Does your state board inspect?

I like this. You could have an eyedropper of bleach by your washer and add one tiny drop per load. You probably wouldn't notice at that dilution but would still be following THE LAW.

This is probably just lifted from the state board of cosmetology regulations.

I DO however use a little bleach with my sheets - but as already said - if you are using city water as opposed to well-water, it IS already chlorinated. And hey...it says TOWELS! :

I would hate to have to use regular bleach, since I have colored towels (dark ones, for mud wraps, etc) and bleach is hard on fabric. Our state doesn't have any regulations about laundry. But we use color-safe bleach laundry detergent.

Well, I'm such an idiot. I washed three loads of sheets (at 3 sets per load-- my home washer can handle MUCH more than the office one, sigh), and used a TINY bit of bleach in each load. I now have at least three of my brand-new (been used just a couple of times) sheet sets with bleach spots. Teach me to try to figure things out on my own. Sigh. At $20/set, ON SALE, we can't afford to go through this many sheets. It's my own stupid fault.

Oh, well. I realized in folding them that I really don't like the quality of those sheets anyway. We'll use them as we can, and take them out of circulation when necessary. Live and learn.

Y'all are right-- the city water is plenty chlorinated as it is. I can smell it in the shower. Why didn't I think of that BEFORE I ruined three brand-new sets? t013 t010 t017

The funny thing is that hot water destroys or cuts down the disinfecting properties of bleach. I know this b/c I used to work in a large institutional kitchen where we hand washed the dishes. There had to be three sinks, the first two with hot water and the third had to be cold with bleach to dip the dishes in for disinfecting before drying.

Definitely consider taking those sheets back to where you bought them. They shouldn't have any bleach stains on them if you added your bleach in right. Get your money back and start over.

I don't know HOW to use bleach-- I never use it! Seriously! I even went and bought a gallon the last time my kids were sick, intending to use it to wash their sheets and such, and never got around to it. Never even opened the jug, lol. Last night, I poured a little bit-- like maybe 1/4 cup, seriously, in as the water was filling, then WAITED for it to finish filling before I put the sheets in. I must have splashed it on the agitator or something. I am not thinking the store would take something back for my own mistake? (It wasn't Wal Mart)

I remember once, DH and I were on a trip (had the then-ONLY-4 kids with us), and I went to use a public laundromat to wash our clothes. Someone had obviously not only just used some bleach in the washer I chose, but also SPILLED it on said washer, because DH's brand-new Levi's came out with this HUGE bleach spot on them. I mean, HUGE. Bleach and I do NOT get along.
