Best electric guitar for a newbie?

Ok I am a total newbie to guitar, yet I have a desire to play and maybe even a fetish for a "Cool Looking" guitar that's gotten me in trouble a few times because it's not the look that counts but tone and playability right?...right? So after having purchased several guitars through out the years but always end up selling them. Because in the store, I never know the right questions to ask or how to play, or even what a "right guitar" feels like. I've just always bought "The cool looking one", get it home and struggle my ass off learning to play it and give up. Here's why I think that is 1) The guitar was probably a cheaply made guitar or 2) My opinion: I need a guitar with a narrower neck to accommodate (these 12 year old girl hands I was born with), I'm 27 male... Any idea's on a narrower necked electric guitar for around $200-400 that might suit a newbie? Thnaks
