Do guys introduce themselves just to be friendly?

Maybe this is too obvious a question, but this one guy in my night class (who I think is really cute, btw) came over while everyone was standing around outside the building. I was next to another girl, and we were kind of listening to our classmates' conversation. He walked up, said "Hi, guys," introduced himself and shook our hands. Then he asked how the class was going for us, if we liked the work, etc. I didn't say much, so he ended up mostly talking with the other girl. By then, it was time to go back inside.
If he spoke only to me, I probably wouldn't have to ask...except we were in a small group. Does this just sound like polite behavior?

it does, he may just be genuinely interested in getting to know other people.
