There is a therapist in my area who recently moved. I have heard from two different sources she wants $100 per day from IC renters.

She has a renting IC who moved with her, but I don't know what she is charging her.

To give you an example of rent prices here, I pay $600 plus utilities for a private two room suite. I have a friend who rents out of a tanning salon and she pays a percent with that maxes out at $350 per month plus about $30 for utilities. I have another friend who rents for $300 plus utilities and can get extra rooms in her building for $200. The place I started out in charged me $300 everything included.

So, what is up with charging $100 per day?? This particular therapist charges $65 per hour, which is on the higher end around here. If someone took her up on her offer, charged the same as her, rented the room 3x per week, and saw 6 clients a day, they would make $4680 every 4 weeks and pay $1200 every 4 weeks. Over the course of a year, your rent would be $15600. That is, if you can get 18 clients to come in on those 3 days every 4 weeks.

Yesterday I got a call from a MT in the area looking for work. I told her I wasn't hiring and asked if she had thought about self employement because I knew a friend who had space. She asked, "She isn't the one who just moved by the ABC Flower Shop, is she?"

"You mean Beth who wants $100 a day?" I asked back. "No, it's someone else."

I have half a mind to speak with this MT and find out her reasonings. She is never going to rent that place for $100 per day. But then, maybe that is her intention?

To be perfectly honest, I think it's her business and she can charge what she wants to. It's her perogative. Either she'll find someone to pay what she wants or she'll lower her price.

I don't see where it's the massage community's business to say how much she can charge. It's a free market.

How stupid of me not to think she has a right to charge whatever she wants. Thank you for pointing that out mooger.

Maybe she has a reason for justifying her high rate, I don't know for certain. I was throwing out the question to the group to get different insight. I thought that is what this group was all about.

I doubt you will get her reasoning for justification from any of us. Why don't you call her up and ask her about it since you don't know for certain (from her mouth) what she is charging for rent, what is included in the rent, etc.

There are some around here who charge insane pricing. Mostly the therapists there don't last long.

BTW- I, too, agree that it is irrelevant what she charges. It is her space to do with what she wants. If you truly want to know, then ask her.

Ok I'll bite. . . $100 a day is outrageous :shocked: At least at first blush, maybe she thinks you can charge your clientel a hundred dollars per session to make up for it, who knows :roll:

I'm sure it would depend on what she is paying for rent. For instance, I pay $400 a month plus utilities for my space (one 250 sq. foot room) and would be willing to rent it out on my days off (sun,mon) for $115/mo for both days. If she's paying more, then she of course would sub-lease for more. For me, it's all about location, location location. I'm smack downtown with an actual parking lot for my building which is PRIME real estate here. If I were to move across the hall where there would be 2 treatment rooms, I'd sublease the other for $450/week because that's half of the rent.

So, that's probably her reasoning.

Interesting that you feel she charges on the higher side of things. I wouldn't be surprised that she feels you aren't charging enough. As for her choice in rent -- possibly she is including equipment and supplies or referrals to whoever rents that space.

I agree with a lot that has been said so far. Including your quickness to jump on Moogie for offering her opinion. It sort of makes me question why this is such a button pushing issue for you?

How has this woman asking $100/day changed your business or who you are as a person?

After looking at why this is a hot issue for you, then decide if you wish to call her to hear 'straight from the horses mouth' what she is asking/offering. But I think once you look at the issue within yourself you will realize that this person has no effect on you or your success in your practice. So why let the negative in?

...You might just be going off half-cocked since you don't know first-hand what Beth is charging. Is it possible that it's $100/day for all of the Mondays or Tuesdays in a month rather than for each working day? (That's the standard in my area.)

I wonder, though, why you even care what Beth is charging? What difference does it make in your life? I agree with Moogie, Beth will either find someone to pay her asking rate or she'll lower it. Either way, I don't see how it affects you.

In fact, what does it matter what she charges, unless you were renting from her and she suddenly put her rent up.

If she can get $100 per day, more power to her. If not and if she wants to rent it, she will soon learn to lower her price.

I suppose if she can get it thats great for her. It sounds like she may be a little out of the ball park for the area, but maybe she is offering some other incentives like who knows what? For what its worth that would be about average of what rent is around my neck of the woods.
Basically I would not worry about it. Its her business to run as she pleases. If its just driving you nuts, then call her up and ask, but don't get offended if she is not to forthcoming with her business plans. And yes like someone said, I would try and identify why its on your mind so heavy. Theres something more to this, some reason its eating at you.

I agree that some curiosity is good and I too like to know what's going on in the area. I feel it's the tone/attitude in which peacenut posted and her quick bark back at moogie that is bringing up a red flag about this issue.

Sure... and the curiosity and these other potential issues around it can be dealt with as two separate things. Reading back, I see that people have done this. I originally left the thread feeling like folks were implying that the question shouldn't be asked, but nearly everyone flat out said, "Ask her." AND "What's with you?"
