It's not just noise. It's building security as well. Renters may not care as much, but as an owner, I'd be pretty upset. NIMBY (yeah, I'm a hypocrit. suck on it! )

I'm sure the condo association would have something to say about incalls.

Plus, there are zoning issues. Can't just open a business on a residential property willy nilly.

I can see it happening, but not in just any res condo. Short term stay buildings would be perfect. Like the Minto Suites or something.

It's already happening, and has been for a while. There are hookers working out of almost every condo building in downtown TO. People just don't know it (maybe because we use the elevators rather than falling from the sky?).

I don't really anticipate a significant change in the industry overnight. The points above about condo use, zoning, businesses etc are well put. If everything becomes legal and the city wants to get its piece of the business, there'll be City of Toronto SP licenses like dancers have to get, you'll have to register businesses, etc. The drivers will likely have to meet taxi standards, etc etc.

Anyone who has ever opened a small business knows all the stupid hurdles you have to jump through. I think that might be just too much hassle for a lot of indys. So what will happen is much like what already happens. Indys and agencies, instead of 'legitimizing' and spending a shitload of money to do so, will likely continue as per normal.

So if incall is longer criminal behaviour (yay!) I doubt there'll be a lot of interest in the 'industry' in the short term to actually function as Canadian small businesses with insurance and payroll taxes and all that noise.

That I know. I used to live in a condo with a few escorts working within (that I knew about, never mind ones I didn't!). But it's generally been on the QT. I fear that discretion won't be as valued after decriminalization?

Maybe, but I bet (like the one incall I went to on bay st) the other residents/owners would file a formal complaint when there is a constant parade of men walking their halls. It was so obvious at the one I was at because the finish was worn off the dark mahogany stained doors from all the knuckles rapping on it.

I think it would be great for the indy ladies if they could work out of their residence for strickly comfort issues. I know many wouldn't but I can also see multi-lady incalls receiving an influx of complaints if they don't keep it low key.



I think this is what the feds are playing up. That many incall operators would suddenly put up neon lights and red velvet ropes outside their unit. Let's hope they're wrong and the legit, responsible operators won't go batshit and ruin this for everyone.

I still say Toronto needs a red light district where it's all on the up and up, regulated, patrolled, safe for customers and especially, the ladies.

Did anyone see the video on other countries that have put down similar laws? They too thought society would go to hell in a handmaiden oops basket but they didn't....life went on and everyone was happy (or seemed to be in the video). They also stated that there were fears of increased human trafficing and that didn't materialize either.

I think now though, if the laws are in fact overturned, that if a woman in EE wanted to come here to make some $$ as an escort, it would be easier for her to get here on her own as opposed to having to rely on a third party.

As for NIMBY, you're not a hypocrite. I like to go to bars and listen to loud music but I wouldn't want a bar opening in the unit next door to mine. Especially with prices the way they are, who would want to pay half a mill for a condo then find out there's a cat house right next door?

I would have NO problem is an owner was an sp and wanted to have clients over. I think it would only be a problem (like I said) if there was a constant parade of horny guys waiting or wandering the halls.

As for the condo boards. That is the way the incalls would be shut down if the laws are overturned. I lived in a live/work building and they tried to shut me down but I fell within the zoning bylaws so they were SOL. But I know it only takes 51 or 52% of owners to vote on modifying the condo rules to reflect something like "no prostitution" in the units.

Putting aside the fact that your comment has nothing to do with the topic at hand, since she and her passport says that she's a woman, I believe that your opinion on the issue is irrelevant (as well as offensive, but that was obviously your intend).


As I already said, there are already incalls in (almost) every condo building downtown, often more than one. People just don't know it. Why? Because most people running an incall in a condo building understand that they won't be able to stay in the building for very long if they don't operate discretly enough and avoid pissing off their neighbours/management.

There's no reason to believe that this will change much if/once incalls become legal.

I'd be surprised to learn that any high volume incall operating for a few months is a secret to anyone living on the same floor . There are operations that have carried on for years because they are respectful and as discreet as possible .

It would be great if sex workers could set up , without fear of harassment , in a commercial space that would not interfere with civilians enjoyment of their home . Win , win .

Well, there isn't if you live with your head in the sand. You have to admit that there are some people in this business who don't always do the right thing and in this case, those people would be the ones who don't continue to keep a low profile. One possible reason for NOT keeping a low profile is to garner new business.

Decriminalization (or legalization) is only one aspect of the issue. Mitigating negative impacts has more to do with progressive social support networks and reasonable regulation.

It'd be nice if the social stigma could be removed so that if an escort is in trouble, she'd have no fear of going to the police for help.

Hopefully once decriminalization happens the police will no longer have their preconceived notions of what they do for a living. I think this is wishful thinking though.

Not sure what you mean about "expanded" healthcare. SPs already have access to the same services that everyone does......and if they need to see a therapist (like blank_dave) they have access to them as much as we do. But specific support services, yeah, it'd be great if SPOC could expand to include career counselling, help with "out" strategies, etc.
