Hi!
I just recieved word yesterday, I passed my State Boards, I am just so excited!

I have been reading around and trying to figure out exactly how you come up with a name for your practice, and where and if you have to legalize that name somehow - I'm thinking there is more to it, than just putting any name you come up with, in the phone book, or on a business card. Obviously I could use my name, with LMT after it or something. However, I wanting something a little more.

A name I am really thinking I love, is 'A Healing Touch'. However, I am sure that is taken - somewhere. No where around here (it's not in the phonebook at least!) which might be a good sign - but - I just cant imagine you can come up with a name like that and run with it - Can you?? Am I even making sense?

Now, about this name, mentioned above. I am going on to further my training, with Oncology Massage. So - maybe the name is a bit - too much. If you know what I mean, the definition for healing is "tending to cure, or restore to health". Which you unfortunately can not do with Cancer. So, is the name misleading (for a lack of better words?).

I am open to other ideas! My main focus will be Pain Relief, Stress Relief, Cancer, and Fibromyalgia. Something simple, easy to remember is good. Sometimes even the shorter the better.

I am completely lost on Company Motto.

Thank you so much for any help!!! I am reading the Name my business thread, but I have such specific questions, I wanted a new post - :smt016

How do you name your business? And more..

I guess I should also say, which is BIG in naming something...

Eventually I'd like to grow, into a day spa of sorts - Facials, etc

I know of A Healing Touch massage business where I live - in fact I went to DT classes there! How I came up with my name - I just kept thinking about what kind of message I wanted to convey about my massage style and myself. *And* it had to be (obviously) a name not registered by another business instate. As far as establishing it as 'your name', it may vary depending on where you live. In my state, I had to go to the county courthouse and do a lookup to ensure no other business had that name. Then I was able to register it as 'mine' (and I cannot remember what the name of that office is!) Then I had to go to the state Dept of Revenue and get a business license in that name, showing them the paperwork I received at the courthouse-fee for that too. I have to renew that business license every year, but not the name of the business -that's a one time deal. Because the shop I work at is within town limits, I also have to have a city business license, renewed every year as well. Once I had all that, I could order cards, put an ad in, whatever. Check with your city or state on business license regulations, probably start with the Dept of Revenue and they can tell you what you need to do in your state.

Congrats on passing!

ETA: Prothontary Office - that's where I filed the DBA name.

Thank you, so much for the help! I was lost, now I can at least have a good idea for where to start!!

I like the name you chose for your practice; "tranquil spirit massage" that is real nice!

You were very helpful! Thanks again!!

It is very important to think of your big picture when creating your name. It takes a lot of work to build your brand and reputation. EVerytime you change the name it is almost like starting over. Another thing to consider is who you are trying to attract. You only get a moment to grabs someone's attention. What does your name tell them? You want your name to stand out, not blend in. When we were deciding on a name for our new office last year, we had several things to keep in mind- most of which has already been mentioned by the previous posters.

Here's what our thought process was:

1) Both husband and wife working together (husband doing the majority of the massaging)- so, nothing too "frilly" or "feminine".

2) Husband's specialty is pain management. Nothing spa-ish whatsoever.

3) Small community close to several larger ones. We wanted to "get in on the ground floor", being as we're the *only* "massage-only" business in this small community. We wanted to be like the guy standing on the street corner waving his arms and jumping up and down saying "This is WHERE TO GO for massage in ".

4) This small community is a "sistership" of four *really* smaller cities- we talked to several residents to decide between (not our real name) won out over - appeal to more people.

5) We honestly have *no* intentions of changing from our current focus of pain management/therapeutic maintenance (with a side of the occasional pre/post natal work done by me). so sticking with this name 'for the long haul" shouldn't be a problem at all.

We considered the same issues when deciding on our logo. The most important point to us with that was that my husband didn't want us to settle on anything "frilly", because of his being part of the business as well as me (he is, as I mentioned, our *main* therapist), so the logo must fit *his* image and also work well for me.

Interestingly enough, I ran across what we have found to be *perfect* for our purposes right on Vistaprint. So I twiddled with the words, paid for the logo, and now we can use it on everything we use- either from VP itself or elsewhere. We got a HUGE 4' x 8' sign for our building- it can be seen from the stop sign that is catty-cornered from us. It is *just* the logo and our name on a white background.

I put this logo on *everything* we hand out- cards, flyers, it's on a set of magnets we use on our car-- also *very large*- just the logo, our name, and telephone number. I've seen car door magnets that have so much information squished onto them that all I could see was a blur for the logo and a whole lot of little words I couldn't read while driving down the road. I didn't want that for our magnets. I want folks to SEE the logo, recognize it from elsewhere, and then it triggers the memory the next time they see us somewhere else. I've mentioned to hubby that in time, as we develop our business plan, we will probably want to consider having a unique logo made up to replace this one that "yes, others are also using" (though I haven't seen it anywhere else near us, and if there is someone else here using it, it's not as BIG as ours so folks will think of US anyway if they see it- that's the thought, anyway, LOL!). His reply- and several others' as well- was that "This fits us *so well*, it would not benefit us to consider changing it for a very long time, if ever. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" LOL!

However...

Hubby is getting quite the reputation for his stone massages. No, they're decidedly *not* "spa-y". He uses them therapeutically and ohhhhhh, what a dream to enjoy! Our logo actually DOES depict stone massage, so it is even more fitting than I ever imagined!

LOL... you weren't asking for a lecture on picking out a logo- sorry 'bout that! It's just that there are similar considerations for picking out a logo as a business name. They do indeed go hand in hand!

My friends' company name is "Whitewave Body Work" - she works on athletes, especially volleyball players, triathletes, and surfers. Her name sounds nothing like anyone elses. And it is very representative of who she is. I feel there should be a considerable amount of time spent on chosing your business name. I also feel stongly about having a great logo, and stay consistent in your branding. I could go on for a while on this soap box ...

I know of A Healing Touch massage business where I live - in fact I went to DT classes there! How I came up with my name - I just kept thinking about what kind of message I wanted to convey about my massage style and myself. *And* it had to be (obviously) a name not registered by another business instate. I just tossed around phrases and words and one day driving home from school I thought 'Tranquil Spirit Massage!' Although I am an IC and advertise with the business name of the shop I work at, I have kept all my licensing, business bank accounts, etc in that name. I don't want to lose the name - although I'm not planning on going anywhere, you never know what might happen and I like the name. Congrats on passing!ETA: Prothontary Office - that's where I filed the DBA name.
