How should I introduce my cats?

My fiance and i just got a new kitten (3 or 4 months old)..we already have a 2 year old cat. She grew up around dogs, and has only been around one other cat..that cat was bigger than her, but she growled and hissed etc. We've been keeping them completely separated for the last 24 hours because the young kitten is extremely skittish, and we want to try to get her comfortable to the house and us before we introduce a cat that may scare her badly...

To introduce a new kitten/cat into the family, in your situation, make up a kitty palace in the bathroom (the smaller space when entering a new home, the more safe kitty will feel). Put a little litter box in there, a bed, towels on the floor, food, water, toys.

Give 2 or 3 days of kitty being in there so kitty and cat can smell each other under the door. Also, you can putt kitty blanket after kitty has slept on it out for the cat to sniff, and vice/versa for the kitty to smell cat's blankie.

It's hard, but honestly, the kitty feels safer coming into a new environment if the space is smaller and is protected from any threats of any kind, no matter how innocent.

Then slowly introduce them and they will learn to either love each other or at least tolerate each other. )
