HS Newbie this year, help please.?

I am going into 9th grade this year, and will be at a totally new school.
I was wondering if any was up to giving some tips, please no "be yourself" because I have that nail hammered down.
But I'm what people call a "scene kid", often mistaken for "emo".
I really want to have great friends, and stuff. So, when I get to school (I'll be riding my Schwinn bike!) do I walk around campus, find my class(s)...? When I see people from the save sort of group Im from do I smile and walk over? Do I wait for them? I'm a shy person at times, and need help with this stuff!
Not to mention at lunch, what to do!
So basically it's how to act and get friends again for high school. I wouldn't mind being friends with all the popular people, just to have real friends. Thanks everyonee!
Btww, my friend had said she originally made friends with everyone at first because she introduced herself to everyone, but unfortunately now she's lost all of them since she didn't turn out popular...
I can't just go up to everyone!! Suggestions on this too?

I'm a high school sophomore.
Luckily enough for me most of my friends went to the same HS as me.

A few tips:
Don't let what people say or do influence you.
Be as REAL as possible, if people can't handle it, they can't handle you as a friend.
If you see someone sitting alone, invite them to sit with you.
Treat others as you want to be treated.
Introduce yourself, but you don't have to dedicate to anyone.
People's true colors will take a while to show.
Get involved in a group after school (band, sports, whatever), it'll help you meet people.
And last, don't worry about it too much. You may find that people flock to you.
