I want to be a massage therapist in NYC, advice needed!

I am currently working as a new LMT. I work at a spa and am building up my resume. in the next year or two I want to finally move down to the city and work. Any advice is appreciated. Here are some random questions...

-How is the client flow? I would guess that such a large city would keep a MT busy and that I could count on that for my income... is this true?

-I love working at a spa and am trying to get my resume very "spa worthy" any advice on skills I should learn?

-I dont have much sales experience but I know that some spas like for you to push products. How can I gain some experience in that? My spa doesnt require it and there isnt any product there for an MT to push.

I am hording away my tips and working hard. My boss is very happy with me and my clients always have great things to say. I still feel very "green" and am working on all of the little things that make you more professional. I hope that in a year I can start to send out my resume and move down to NYC. Any reccomendations on spas to work at down there would be great as well!

All depends on the spa and how they are dealing with the new reality. Keep in mind, NYC lost 10s of thousands of high-paying financial services jobs. Hotel occupancy is down and many of the hotels are attracting Euro tourists, who are there for the shopping and the shows and the food -- not a strong spa-using customer.

This is hard because experience is the best teacher. You can't just study the product info on every line you might encounter in NYC -- there are too many and some don't expect MTs to sell anyway. Just work on your listenting skills -- what is it your clients talk about wanting/needing to keep them looking and feeling their best.

There are hundreds of great spas in NYC. Start looking through issues of American Spa to see what locations are featured, what owners are interviewed, etc. YOu also might look into some spa management companies, like WTS and Plus1. Some have flexible staffing models that move you around to keep you busy.

I'd say for most spas, if you have a good knowledge and flair in wraps, salt scrubs and hot stones, you are getting into what they'd like. At least that's what I've found in the past.

Visit our Spa Section, it will be a huge help for you.... and if you can get your boss into the Pevonia line, they do come out and provide trainings on their products. Again, that is something I have experienced in the past (when working at a large spa) - you'd have to check to see what's going on nowdays.

Do you have a line of skin care products that you really like to use? Use it, and sell it. Given that your spa has no product to push, perhaps they would not object to you doing this.
