"Online" Massage Schools...have you heard of these?

So I was talking to an acquaintance who mentioned that she signed for an "online" massage school.

The school is based here in Edmonton....supposedly it's about 500 hours of online instruction and then you take an exam.

My question to the masses....how can you teach a hands-on skill (such as massage therapy), via remote/online?

I know that there are schools where the student attends in person, (and they get hands-on instruction).

Has anyone come across a provider who was trained via online/remote and what was the quality of massage like?

Can a person become an RMT via an online school?

Just curious.....

It’s unfortunate that there are businesses out there that take advantage of a young and vulnerable/nieve population.

Update on my acquaintance attending "online" massage school.

She is in to "hawk' for $35,000 CDN...yes, you read that right....$35,000

She went through Student Aid and is on the hook for this amount (I couldn't believe it)!

I suggested that she see if she can get a refund and go elsewhere but she said that the school doesn't return phone calls, so will stick it out.

I passed along some notes (that I used when I was starting out on my career path), such as:

- what is the success rates of past graduates finding employment in the industry that you trained for (since the school doesn't return phone calls she can't find this out).

- in my personal life, I reached out to about 10 different employers (spoke directly to HR) and asked about what post-secondary schools they recognized mostly (in my field I had about 5 schools that I could of gone to so some had more recognition then others

I did suggest possibly seeing if there was anything legal that she could pursue but it I don't think that she's into fighting it.

A simple google search would of pulled up widely known schools in Edmonton that she could of pursued.....

I just feel bad for seeing someone getting taken advantage of.

You feel bad for someone not doing their due diligence on one of the biggest decisions of their adult life?

What is "hawk"? Is that the school? I can't find any mention of it so I assume no. What school is it?

Not to sound like I am trying to shame your friend here, but so many people want to take the shortest way from point A to point B. An example of that was the Truck Driver school in Calgary that rubber stamped almost 500 drivers . There will always be someone that will present you an option but it will cost. In the case of the Driving school they had to reimburse their clients and the certifications were void.

The new drivers could have caused harm.
As in the case of any massage therapist some of us have been injured by the odd one , whose skills were not up to par.
I had a permanent injury from a WCB physio therapist. She wanted me to keep it quiet, so my first call was to my case worker . That also goes along with just because someone has legit credentials, when they get too full of themselves and skill levels they can be just as dangerous as any fktard behind the wheel of a guided missile.
I am not unsympathetic to your friend, and I hope she gets her money back, but she should do the class time at a reputable school of massage.

She's a casual acquaintance and she sounds pretty determined to stick it out!

The unfortunate thing is that she said that the debt (of $35,000) is now showing in her CRA account, so the debt will always follow her until it's paid off.

It is a legit course, theory and learning techniques are done through online, you are taught by in person professors in a conference room every second weekend and also take the exams in person. You can also do volunteer at any place and count those as your hands on hour requirement (1 yr should equal close to 1000 hrs)
They must provide at least 2 yrs of schooling for the 2000 hours
You cannot become an RMT without the 2000 hrs of schooling

I will be seeing her in about a weeks time so will casually ask her if she's started it yet, and what her progress is to date.
