Phones in the treatment room

I bought a set of cordless phones over the weekend.

The set includes three phones. One sits on the main base and is also an answering machine. The other two have charger bases and do not need to be connected to a phone line.

I am going to put the extra phones in the treatment rooms with the ringers turned off.

I figure doctors treatment rooms have phones in them, why not a massage treatment room? If there is an emergency, the phone is there to be used. I figure it might keep male clients with ulterior motives from acting on those motives as well.

Does anyone else have phones in thier treatment rooms? Do you see any problems with having a phone in the treatment room?

As long as the ringer is off and you aren't answering the ringing phone during a session (yep, actually had a MT do that during my massage once....not good) I think having a phone handy wouldn't be a bad idea.

I had not thought about it, but it is a FAB idea. Not just for a client with alterior motives, but even in the event you have to call 911 for a client! As long as they dont ask to use it during the massage lol

i have a very similar set, except it has 5 or 6..now i can't remember but anyway i have it and use it for that reason too. the only fault with mine (at&t) is that the ringer on the main base can not be turned off. i have to hide it in the storage room and cover it with a towel!

Too funny living well!! Every phone can be turned off with this set.

Some people do not like cordless phones because they wont work when the power goes out. I currently have a cordless and the power has never gone out. So, I am not going to worry about it. Worst case senario, I do have my cell phone for a back up.

May I suggest adding a headset to your primary phone, so that you can use it when you need to call someone about scheduling or other issues, and still work "hands free?" There are just so many times my headset has come in handy while doing paperwork or even returning a call while making up the table between clients...

Have 2 phones in my practice room - one corded that is my answering machine, directory of stored phone numbers, etc. and a cordless phone that I carry around the house w/ me when I'm not working. Both can have the ringers turned off. The cordless is usually left in the dining room just outside my office so I can hear it ring while I'm in session so I can check the caller i.d. and be certain that it isn't someone I MUST pick the phone up for -- incoming call from an elderly neighbor for whom I'm the primary "come get me up off the floor" person on her life alert --- or a call for a client who doesn't have a cell phone. Ninety-nine point nine per cent of the time I don't have to bother with the phone in the office at all during a session.

It did come in very handy, however the day one of my favorite ladies decided to present with heart attack-like symptoms. Dialing 911 isn't that hard, nor is wandering around the office tethered to a 25 foot long cord. Gathered her personal information from her purse [with permission of course] while talking to the dispatcher, etc and gave them all the particulars they needed to know before they left the fire department for the run to my house. That gave me time to take her car keys, move the car out of the driveway and onto the street [elapsed time 43 secs.], get her semi-dressed for the the ambulance ride, and be prepared to answer questions on her behalf for the squad members. Now I know that the ambulance can back up under the roof of my carport easily, that the gurney fits easily through my entry door, and that it will also very easily roll right up beside my massage table for easy transfer of a person in need of assistance to the hospital.

Phones in a treatment room are a great thing -- wouldn't be without one, ever!!!!

Yeah, that is a great idea. My mom would use it the most. The phone was a major stress for me. I am so glad mom loves taking phone calls. Clients comment on how good she is at her phone skills quite often. Gosh, I love my mom!

Yes, if you have a cell phone as a backup, there's no need for a corded phone. I think I'm one of the last people on earth without a cell phone, but like you, I prefer the freedom of a cordless phone in the office. So, I have a $5.00 corded phone in my closet to use in the event of a power oueforum.xxxe. (I have had to use it twice.)

Another thought on power oueforum.xxxes is to keep a flashlight with long-life batteries available in each treatment room. I've had to use this, too. It's amazing how dark it gets when the power goes out! :shock:

I have a plug in flash light in my treatment room. It serves as a nightlight when plugged in, but if the power gets cut, the flashlight shines bright. It has come in handy when someone needed to crawl around the basement.

my only thought about having the phone in a treatment room is would your client see it? i wouldn't want to be in a treatment room and see a phone sitting there. i'd wonder if it was going to ring during my massage. i mean if you want perv's to see it that's one thing but how many perv's vs. wonderful clients do you plan on seeing? i wouldn't want my clients to have thoughts that it might ring out loud during their session. i will occasionally bring my phone in with me during a session if i just get an odd feeling or if i have someone new in my room. of course the ringer is off and i put it under my table. assuming that if something bad did happen, i'd end up on the floor so the phone would be within reaching distance. gotta think ahead sometimes!

That is what I was thinking - just take the silenced cordless in when you go, after the client is on the table. I wouldn't want to see a phone in the treatment room, if I was the client. I also would not want the concern that a client would decide to USE my phone that was sitting in the treatment room, looking available!

Make sure to have a sign that using cell phones is not permitted. I honestly don't like the phones in rooms even with the ringer off. I feel that it will give a client the idea they can use it if they wanted to. Sometimes clients get bold and will use your stuff if there's nobody around. I work in a clinic, you know how many times patients open up cabinet drawers to see what's inside, or even take things to use them, but they aren't "freebies" to give away such as packets of antibiotic ointments. We've had people who didn't see anybody in the front office and thought it was okay to just go straight to the back and use the restroom. It would have been fine if they didn't take a birdbath in our sink...it was a homeless person.

I think most likely, someone with strange motives isn't going to be quick enough to catch you. They are lying down on the table naked. You're standing and wearing clothes. You most likely have a chance to jet out of there and get to a phone. It's better to get out of the room anyway...

I think the important thing is that the therapist knows they are there... you can take them off the charger and put them in a drawer during the day if you like, returning them to the charger each night at closing.

This just got me thinking. When I first starting working in the massage biz. I worked with this lady who would answer calls during a massage. Her 13 yr old daughter would come in and if her mom was in a massage she would use the office phone and call her cell phone that was in the room. The lady would answer it!!!!!

The front door had a dinger on it and if someone came in she would poke her head out and see who it was. I never got a massage from her and I don't know how she stayed busy.

She is the only person that I have ever walked out on. Just pushed one too many buttons.
