the best one ever!!!

We are all used to the 'weekly weirdo' phone call, but today I had the best one ever.
A man phoned up this afternoon enquiring about reflexology treatments for himself and partner. After I'd told him the price, availability etc, he asked me if it would be possible if I could massage his and his partner's feet while they made love on my treatment table !!!!!!!!

I'm usually quite good at dealing with the kinkies, but I have to say, I was totally lost for words, and mumbled something incoherant before putting the phone down.

This is a bit worrying for me as a recently-qualified reflexologist! I chose the course over other types of massage in hopes of avoiding this kind of thing. Have other reflexologists had 'weekly weirdos'? Dotcom, to you really get one every week? I've not had any weirdos yet (I think!)

No I dont get one every week, but i am at the moment as the new yellow pages is out in my area and that seems to set them off for a few weeks.
Usually they just ask if any other services are provided. Dont worry about it Jantheal, everyone gets them. Just be wary when booking in male clients. If you think someone may be'dodgy' , tell them you are busy and ask for their number to phone them back. I would never book anyone who phones from a mobile, but usually they decline to give you their number and hang up.

I haven't had too many dodgy calls, I mainly get them from ingocnito therapists wishing to find out my prices.

I have recently invested in 'caller display' and found that this saves a lot of stress in having to deal with unwanted calls.
People who are genuinely interested in your services rarely withold their number, and they will always leave a message on the answer machine.

Have to disagree with you there Lynn, I regularly get people hanging up on my ansaphone as they wish to talk to another person and not a machine as to whether I would be able to help them or not, mostly only current clients leave messages I find new ones dont except on the odd occassion where they have been referred from an existing client or friend.
On a personal note my number is witheld from my main phone always has been.

No, not getting wet, as we haven't had any rain today in this part of the world.

Yes, some people will hang up on an answer phone. But, I put getting clients down to fate. If they need my help, they will leave a message or call back. Its just my personal preference.
I know there is always an exception to the rule, as you say your number is always witheld. But I find my day goes by with much less stress this way.

Was thinking of advertising in the Yellow Pages, but am not so sure now! Do therapists find this a good way of attracting clients? Or just a good way of attracting crank calls? I really didn't expect this to be a problem with reflexology.

I have had my own share of crank calls and I used to get more from the yellow pages when I had a free line under "Complementary Therapies". The next year I moved my free line to the Reflexology section and took out my main ad under the AoR banner. I haven't had many crank calls since, and to be honest I don't always know where they come from. When you're being asked for a "personal service" at 2 am you don't always think to ask "and where did you hear about me?"!!

To be on the safe side I know advertise myself as a ladies only practice, but do still see men who have been referred to me from wives, girlfriends, etc. This way I feel safe, especially as I work from home.

All I thought when I heard about that, Dotcom was foot fettish.. ooh Footfettish.. was it you? Sorry! Just the name... I'm never going to see it in the sme light again, again, huge apologies!

Since my caller I've heard a few stories of nudists and fellas who wanted their feet done whilst they um, did themselves.. *cough* Only responses I've had from the Yellow Pages are cold callers begging me to buy advertising space for charities without charity numbers and that man.. I believe it's cause I didn't list the therapies I did on my ad (as I am adding quite a few more over the course of the year and didn't want to lose business), nor did I include a big list of professional organisations as some therapists do. If I take out an ad next year, it'll be all sparkly and have lots of acronyms on it - apparently it does do the trick.

I echo what dot com and Sarah say. I get the occasional " personal services" ahem, call but use a "you're so sad" voice whilst firmly saying no. I too advertise as a ladies only therapist but will treat men if referred by a creditable source. You can't be too careful!

I too am one of those who has never had a crank call, but my wife (who does Aromatherapy) had a great one the other year...

A man phoned to ask if he could book a massage for his wife, and could he be there while she was massaged? He then went on to ask if my wife could massage his wifes boobs while he watched!!!!

i went in yellow pages with a free line and chose the reflexology section and have had zilch return on it! i just thought the alternative section was too vague... hardly anyone listed showed what therapies they did do. i was a little reticent to promote massage in YP, i have to say. isnt it awful when you have to feel like that? <sigh>
