For me , it is all about service , good friendly service means good tip , bad service gets nothing. This applies for hotels , restuarants , bars (including BG's) and taxis , normally with tuk-tuks it depends on if I think they are trying to "rip me off" or not.

i had a similiar experiance a couple of years ago. stayed at a friends apartment about an hours drive outside bangkok. (ok, considering bkk's traffic...it wasnt that far out!)

anyway, the thai elections were on so no beer. i went to a nice little roadside food place...gave the guy a tip and he didnt know why i was giving him the money...he thought i wanted more food!

maids i am clear on, very happy with the service.

wondering for security guard and receptionist-slash-manager, both just lukewarm service, but I am leaving in a few days and have not tipped reception in 4 months and new security guard in 1 month (tipped previous security guard who was better). slightly better than backpack place.

The staff in the hotels get some attention from me, especially the cleaning ladies who do my wash and pounce on my scarcely worn European cut clothes and pocket full of coins and small bills when I offer them at the end of my stay. And I regularly toss the security man a can of beer or a pack of smokes for paying special attention to my takeaways late at night. Small gestures but people don't forget such consideration. It works wonders anywhere, not just in LOS. I spend half of my working life in hotels so I depend on their service.

Similar story to when I was in Kanchanburi, I stopped in a little thai place had a soup for 40Baht amd gave the girl a 20Baht tip, she went to show who I think were her sisters working there with the biggest smile on her face.

Agree on that one. Never less than 50, but usually more if I have coins. As a golden rule I never tip less than 20%, but usually more in LOS due to cheap prices and that the people are poor.

same, same with me IJ - 50baht regardless, a small amout for us but as Nicke pointed out it could be the difference between a good and a bad month for the waitresses.

by myself i usually tip around 20-50 baht, taxis in bkk rounded up, but when i am with the wife, she carries the money and she tips very rarely.

the real exception to this is the issan taxi drivers in bkk, if they are from the issan they get a considerably higher tip than the bkk born drivers.

20-100 baht when paying bar bill.tuk-tuk NO NO they have already ripped you off so NO tip.
in a restaurant about 10% should extract a smile and a wai.

on my last trip.i used to leave 60 bath on the bed each morning b4 leaving the room.the cleaning staff was a team of 3 girls they got 20 baht each every morning for 12 days < had to see'em running into my room as soon as I was out >5555 plus I left 500 baht at the reception to share with the bar staff.

Depends largely on service for me also. Although for meals I would normally throw in 20 baht regardless. (Unless I just have a noodle soup…)

I also think “extraordinary” service should be amply rewarded. When my folks stayed in Kamala for two weeks they usually ate lunch (and rented beach chairs) at the same place. The girls working there really went out of their way to accommodate them.

And at the end of the trip, there were hugs and kisses and tears and “see you next year”, etc. My dad was so moved that he gave each one them a 1000 baht tip.

... and not in my wildest dreams would I ever even think about tipping a tuk tuk.

When I check out of my hotel, I always leave a "handsome" tip in my room for the (4) cleaning ladies...and a handwritten thank you note. (written by GF, in Thai)

Then, at front desk, I leave a nice tip, for all the staff members. (security, reception, bar/restaurant) It means so much to them. And they all deserve it, they treat us wonderfully. (over and above the norm)

Side note: I leave a large (duffle type) bag, at the hotel front desk. (they park it in a storage area, behind the reception desk, for me) It has things like DVD player, speakers, motorbike helmet, golf shoes, etc. Just stuff that I don't want to cart around the world...it's waiting for me, each time I arrive back in Patong.

Once, I left my (battery powered) alarm clock in the bag...with the alarm set to go off at 08:30AM. (by accident, of course) When I returned a couple of months later....the girls at the front desk told me (laughingly), that every morning for nearly 2 weeks (after my last departure), this alarm went off for about five minutes. Eventually the battery went down, and no more wake up, for the front desk.

I told them, they should have opened the bag, and turned the alarm off. They would absolutely NOT invade my property. Never had any problems with leaving the bag.

Bars/restaurants staff: about 10%, but never less than 20 baht. To me anything less just looks insulting (but again, that's just me)

Transport: nothing as it is in the fare.. sometimes round up if I can't/don't want to wait for taxi change.

Maids: my daily change buildup 15-25 baht per day usually

Massage gal: 100 baht

Haircut guy: 30 baht

yep.....I present the cleaning staff and the lady who does my clothes washing in the hotel with a little envelope everystay just before I leave .....the thought/kindness is returned many times over during my stay

I also like to leave about 10% at a restaurant......more like 20% if I've been looked after well.......
