want to leave my job, what about leftover gift certificates?

Ive been working as an aide for six years in a PT office. I do massage on most of the patients there as well as doing massage as my own bussiness two afternoons a week. I use one of there rooms there for massage (my own bussiness) . I am not offered any benefits because I am an aide ( even though I am full time almost 40 hours a week). I want a change and I am thinking of leaving to find a job with benefits elsewhere. My only dilemma is what should I do with the remaining gift certificates that the clients havent used? Would I refund the money or how do you handle this stuff? I have owned my bussiness for two years and use their space at the pt office rent free. Recently there have been some changes that I dont care for with my position there as a PT aide ( cooperation took over, no benefits, and some unethical issues). I have held onto this job thinking that the grass isnt greener elsewhere maybe, but now I want to leave and maybe stop my bussiness. Do you have any advice on how to handle the gift certificate situation?

Chloe, who sold the GCs? You or the PT office?
If you sold them then you probably can either honor them at your new position or refund the money to the people who bought GCs. Are there many unredeemed GCs?
You might also want to research the laws on GCs in your state. To see what your options are.

My Massage Therapist emailed WI State Senator Joe Leibham and asked him about gift certificates and expiration dates.
This is what he replied:

“Thank you for contacting me with your questions regarding gift certificates and expiration dates. As your State Senator, I am happy to provide you with the following information.

After looking into your questions, I have learned that there is essentially no regulation of gift certificate expiration dates at either the state or the federal level. Gift certificates are seen as contracts between the purchaser and the retail establishment. As long as any necessary information, such as an expiration date, is disclosed to the purchaser, a retail establishment is free to do as it wishes.

Recent legislative attempts to regulate gift certificates have been defeated. As under current law, I believe you should set this policy with your customers.

Based on this, it is my understanding that you are able to place an expiration date on your gift certificates, but you are also able to honor the gift certificate beyond the expiration date if you see fit. I appreciate your investment in our area with your small business and I am happy to report that you are able to do your job with basically no government intervention or regulation in the area of gift certificates.
