What do you say when...

...your client forgets to pay?

Especially if it is a regular client whom you have never had any problem with and you know that it's just a genuine oversight, probably due to the brilliant treatment you've just given them and they're a bit out of it.

How do you avoid embarrassing them and yourself as they're about to walk out the door?

lol... this has happened and i just say, kind of jokingly... were you going to pay?!

if its a regular, they will be embarrassed but you can joke about it and help ease the discomfort of that moment.. even say, it must be because you just had a brilliant treatment!!!

I actually said, 'Do you want to pay next time?', but felt really embarrassed for her. I told her that it happens a lot to make her feel better!

The best thing said to me (yes I do forget to pay for things alot[&:])is.....
and how will you be paying this week/for that item? cash cheque or card?
and that was the only time I wasnt made to feel a ditz!

I usually ask clients for the money as a matter of course as a way of wrapping up the session.

I do actually find it easier to say 'that's £....' in the clinic where I work than at home, especially as old clients know exactly how much the treatment costs! Still, it doesn't happen too often.

When I worked in the nail salon, one of my clients was a policewoman and she nearly walked out without paying - so it was even more embarassing for her, but we just made a little joke and she was fine about it. I probably do it at the wrap, when I'm re-booking, it just depends which mood I'm in.

I had a chap walk towards the door at the end of a session yesterday. He had obviously forgot as he was so relaxed after the treatment, but I just said, "And will you be wanting to pay by cash or cheque", and he then got out his chequebook.

I think it went okay because it was a question that presupposed he was going to pay all along.

It doesn't just happen when giving treatments. I also teach Spanish and all my clients are very good except one lady I taught at the beginning of the summer, she would always forget.

The first time I did feel a little embarrased, then I thought to myself "nope, you have to say something Rosi, you've just spent an hour of your time here", so I mentioned it and she was definitely embarrased.

Anyway, practically every week she would forget, I got quite used to reminding her - just very forgetful and I soon got over my fear of asking for the money. Can you imagine if I hadn't said anything, I wouldn't have been paid a penny - hee, heee!!!

heck, am i the only one who forgets to ask the client for money! This has happened at least 8 or 9 times!!!! having a good chat, next appointment already in....water given...next client due, wave bye bye.....I have a fair number of people who will pay for a course so it is not unusual to have a client leave without giving me money so when they do and they are not supposed to i dont often notice!!!

However without fail, they either, turn round at the bottom of the hill and come back - call me and say they will post it, some of my clients live a 90minute drive away from me - some will put it in the letmassageplanetox overnight - and some will just pay next time!....Once had a chap do that and his next time wasnt until 8 weeks later! no matter I felt very well off that day lol

Most clients are well intentioned, but I have a problem in the clinic where I work as they take credit cards, but the freelance therapists who work there don't and we are not allowed to have our payments put through the system.

All my literature says payment by cash or cheque only, but if a new client books over the phone, they don't always see this. I've asked the girls to tell clients this, but ....[sm=banghead.gif] ('nuff said).

I always give clients the benfit of the doubt when they have no money or chequebook on them the first time and I've always been paid, but I have one who has now told me she doesn't carry much money with her or she'll spend it, so for the second time has not brought enough money with her (I'm sure she doesn't get away with it in the supermarket!)

As I have to pay my room rental every week, I've now decided that if she does it again, I will have to say something as it's not the money, it's just, I think, the lack of respect.

Agreed mate.....when i next make an appointment and i put it on the back of the card I often ask if they want me to put the £ down as well so they remember how much it is......then no excuse...
