We are thinking about adopting a dog this weekend, the one we are looking at is a chow-mix and 7 years old.
We currently have 3 cats, two of which grew up with dogs, one has not. But it has been a couple of years since the two have really been around dogs.
What would be the best way to introduce them? The adoption place is not sure of the dog's interactions with cats- I know with being a chow, she may not like cats to say the least-
(I grew up with a chow mix, so I am familiar with the breed). I know I need to take it slow and keep Molly (The dog) on a leash at all times at first.
If by some miracle all goes well this weekend and they get along, or at least ignore each-other, how long do you think I should wait before I let them in the house alone together?
My plan for now is to keep Molly confined to our room during the day when we are not home and at night while we are asleep- and then the next day keep the cats confined to a room and alternate days until I can trust them to be together.
I have had plenty of both cats and dogs but have never had to introduce them like this. Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks!
