Wording ?

Has anyone seen the new FHT magazine. Apparently anyone in therapies not only is adviced to stay away from the word "cure" but also from the word "healing" - soon we're not going to be able to say anything about what we offer.

I'm so cross about this what does everyone else feel?

I know what you mean, but I can see the point. Complimentary therapies don't always work (the first time) and by using words such "cure" and "heal", the person expects some positive result. Then if nothing is perceived to have happened it makes that therapy look bad. In the worse, case the therapist could be sued. In Reiki I was taught to just let Reiki do it's thing and not expect any result.

PS notice I call it "complimentary therapy"

Hi Saffron,

It is actually complEmentary (which is another way of saying alternative) not complImentary (which means free or praiseworthy) although some of the comments I receive after giving treatments are very complimentary!!

Another definition for complementary is "forming a complete or balanced whole" which is what the complementary therapist aiming for when treating their client.

Healing to me means allowing ourselves to receive! It does not mean 'I am going to heal you or cure you'.

Bearing in mind that the only one that does any curing or healing is the person themselves, then I would say that the use of the word 'Cure' in particular is wholly innpropriate in the the context that I suspect you are referring to.

I offer you this - As therapists, practitioners, etc, then we can only ever be catalysts to such processes and only our ego's would think otherwise.

Healing, on the other hand does have wider interpretation and I would like to think that that is taken into consideration. But I'll not be holding my breath on that one.

Are there any links on the issue?
