Using your sports analogy: it's easy being an armchair quar****ack. Sure, he could have winged her, he could have tazed her, he could have grabbed her and wrestled her to the ground. All of which you'd all be sitting here poo pooing that all those alternatives were excessive. I tell you one thing: she wasn't a small petite frail little tidbit. I bet I'd have a hard time getting her to the ground........

When a cop takes down a fleeing suspect, someone is going to get hurt. It sure won't be the cop.......

Something everyone who criticizes the cops forget: they have to make snap decisions. In this case, the cop probably thought she would run and that a person of that size, she wouldn't flop around like a rag doll when "hit".

And as I said repeatedly: it is a LITTLE excessive...does it warrant all this media attention? nope. Does the cop need to be suspended? nope. Does he need to be reminded to be a little more careful next time? Probably.

But to propose suspension, or charges for that matter is L U D I C R O U S at best.......IMO this is no more serious than you or I going 20 kms over the speed limit, forgetting to put a particular invoice in the mail, or forgetting to lock your back door........BFD....

It amazes me how taking photos and video of TTC drivers and posting it all over the net or in the newspaper is perfectly justified but doing the same to the police department is wrong in your opinion! HYPOCRITE!!!!

I think the officer in question was out of line with the force he used on this particular young lady. Yes she was a problem kid but it was obvious she had no weapon or was not a prize fighter that needed to be smashed fast and hard into a cement wall by a raging 250 lb. bull.

The incident was hidden until an employee found the video and together with a Police Supervisor thought the incident was out of line and needed to be aired out. I say good for the Police Department but shame shame on this Officer involved.

SHow me once where I said the cops shouldn't be videotaped? I did say however that we're only seeing PART of the video, not the entire event.

1) Don't compare this (what looks like) a 6' tall 160 lbs drunk teenager to an 80 yr old woman. That's like comparing your brain to a pea......
2) 250 lbs raging bull? You're delusional. Yes, the police officer was a little out of line with the force he used. But just a little. The police spokesman even came on and said that procedure was a common method of taking down a suspect.
3) The video wasn't hidden until anything. It was up for all to see in January 2011 and then, probably because it was part of an investigation, was taken down. Then reposted. No big conspiracy theory here. Who knows who took it down and why.....

A couple of points you've missed:
The suspect didn't require medical attention therefore she couldn't have been hurt too badly
The suspect wasn't hurt so bad she pressed charges against the officer.
The "hit" as everyone is calling it was only an issue because she turned and when "hit" she went into the wall. Otherwise she would have simply fallen to the ground where she was put in cuffs.
When you disregard a police officer's order to stop, or resist arrest, you're going to get hurt. When are people going to learn?

In my opinion what the officer did was totally in line with standard police practises. He didn't break any laws. He didn't break any rules. He took down a fleeing suspect in (as stated by the police spokesman) a standard police practice. What did occur is that he was a little too aggressive in his actions. He has no priors. Has never been in trouble before and the suspect wasn't injured.

And before you bring up the TTC drivers and texting again, Texting while driving is NOT part of their job description so that too is like comparing your brain to a pea. Taking down fleeing suspects in a physical manner IS part of an officer's job description. Do they always go well? No. Does the fleeing suspect sometimes get hurt? Yes. Therefore maybe they shouldn't flee?

bTW: how are those ttc drivers working out for you? Weren't you supposed to show your support by giving them jobs? Or are you just all bluff and bluster?

The probable reason she hasn't sued the police department is that

1) the mother thinks her daughter needed a good wake up call and since she's not parapaligic it's ok that she was rammed by a bull and

2) the young girl doesn't know any better, at least not until some lawyer gets his hands on her

I'm not against the boys in blue as a matter of fact in most instances I full support them but in this particular case, really come on, was that style of take down considering the intended target really necessary??

if all the girl did was SAY something to the cop he had no right to get physically rough. No none of us are perfect but when someone holds a badge and has the right to detain anyone, arrest anyone, question you because you "look suspicious" you have to expect them to live above the standard you expect from the person next to you on the bus. If you saw a man shove a woman to the ground because she told him off, swore at him, or called him a pig would you say he had a right to push her down to the ground and bang her head off the sidewalk? Verbal abuse of any sort does not give anyone the right to assault you. It didn't appear that she was "running" from the officer. She was strolling away. She could have been stopped a lot softer.
The fact that they didn't press charges doesn't mean anything. They are a family going through a lot. They just may not want to deal with anything more than they already are. The fact that the officer may be facing charges independant of the mother/daughter tells me that it was in fact excessive force.

I'm sure btw that the girl is a pain in the ass and the parents (mother) have been putting up with her BS for a long time. It is possible that the mother lost her temper because she was fed up with the girl. She may have been hitting her repeatedly before the camera started rolling. I'm not saying it's ok for her to hit her mom but going by other people's logic that we didn't see what she said or did to the cop...we also didn't see what led up to her punching her mother....

That's the gist of it right there...the video ONLY shows the end of the situation, not the beginning and believe me, the cop didn't push her to the ground because of something she said, it was because she was "fleeing".

To use your example of "a man pushing a woman to the ground" would we feel that was justified? No. But what if the woman was about to push a baby in a stroller into oncoming traffic? What if she was about to stab someone? Then it would be justified no? The thing is, in that example, we don't know the reason behind it so we can't say yea or nay on whether it was justified or not. Because we weren't there and don't know the whole story........

The point I am and always will make is that the cops have to stop fleeing suspects. No ifs ands or buts. To say to a cop: stop all fleeing suspects then criticize them for how they do it is ludicrous. Yes, they have training to teach them techniques on how to do it without causing undo injury to the suspect and if you compare the video in the OP, and the one insertion posted, they are light years apart. One, the woman was continually abused both verbally and physically. In the second the woman was knocked to the ground and cuffed. The end.

One hard and fast rule to live by, and it really is a no brainer:

if you run from the police, you're going to get hurt.


If one choses to run from the police, and gets hurt because of it, Too fucking bad for you. IMO that is no different than trying to pet a rottweiller........

I get your point but it doesn't apply in this case. The police officer was trained correctly and used a police reccommended method of taking down a fleeing suspect. The only problem here was she bounced off a wall instead of simply falling to the ground. Shit happens when you run from the police....

As to your "trained" rottweiller analogy, even the most highly trained, docile animals can "snap" and cause injury. How many stories have we heard where someone has lost an arm, hand, or been mauled and they say "oh, he's always been so gentle......"???

Just one more thing: this cop could have taken down 100 suspects this way and they didn't get hurt. Just so happens that THIS time, someone did. It is unfortunate, but not unavoidable.

Just like snipers, they could hit their target 99 times out of 100 but they'll still "err" once.
Just like speeding: you could speed 99 times but sooner or later you're going to get caught

My statement still stands: you run from the police you're going to get hurt. So, the moral of the story? Don't run from the police.....oh and to insure you don't get bit by a rottweiller? Don't pet them......simple!

Actually no Oddball, comparing something that can be measured in degrees to something that is an either/or situation is incorrect. Force can be measured in amounts, pregnancy can't be.

As for "snapping", that was in response for your incorrect editing of my post. YOU modified my analogy which still stands up. Petting a rottweiller is comparable to running from the police: you could get hurt.

Further to this, I find it ludicrous how we want police to be tough, hard, and strong to protect us from the criminal element but as soon as they are tough, hard and strong, and take down that criminal element, we're all over them for being who they are. Don't you find that a little hypocritical?

Cop, I use the term cop in lieu of police officer of the law, constable, officer, official representative hired to keep the peace.
Convict: someone who was in prison
Girl: a human being of the female gender that has not quite reached maturity

It's excessive force that should be penalized, otherwise we're saying there are no limits to how someone can be taken down. Are you saying there are no limits? If not, what's wrong with penalizing him?

I stand with Oddball in agreement. The majority of the members I feel in a poll would side with the officer using excessive force and a reprimand is in order, possibly a suspension without pay!!
