I have no idea why all are making a big deal out of this. The teenager as you say, happens to be the daughter that took her fists on her mother. She deserves what she got plain and simple.

Exactly and since there has been no previous history of things like this, and he's never been in trouble before, and he's been (I think it stated) an exemplary officer, it should be dealt with appropriately. Charging him and sending him to jail is overdoing it. WAY overdoing it.

Once again, we expect the cops to be aggressive defenders of our freedoms yet if they step over the line even the slightest bit, we poo poo and bemoan them when it happens.

Auggie: there aren't any limits to how a fleeing suspect is taken down. The force necessary is usually determined by the suspect. If they comply? They go into the car unscathed. If they resist? Force is escalated until they go into the car. The police are not allowed to simply "let someone go". Their job is to stop, detain and arrest someone if need be. The only thing wrong in this case is that the wall was there and she banged into it. If she had just been knocked to the ground nothing would be said.

The thing that everyone misses is that a) she was going to be taken down, no matter what since SHE decided to flee. b) the officer used a reccommended standard police tactic to take her down.

She didn't deserve or get a beating. As for whether or not the police get to decide who does or doesn't, since they are the front line people who see everything everyday, maybe they SHOULD be given the power instead of the legal system. If you watch the show "cops" enough you can see how they handle people. If someone complies, no matter how big an asshole they are, the cops treat them with respect. If they resist? They are taken down. If they really resist and run? They are taken down hard. If they fight? They lose...BIG time. I'm ok with that.

I believe the law (up here) states that if the police have reasonable cause to require you to identify yourself, you have to comply. If you don't, they have cause to detain you. If you get physical with them, they have cause to get physical with you. If you decide to fight or flee, YOU've decided to escalate it and deserve whatever you're going to get.....

I still say if it was a 180 lbs 6' male who had just beat up a woman, we wouldn't be having this conversation.........

Exactly, I couldn't of stated it better myself.

Bosco, she wasn't wailing on an old woman. It was her mother who was trying to detain her at all cost. I am not saying throwing knuckle sandwiches at one's mom is justified but it is a little different that wailing on a strange old passerby. I agree this was a domestic situation with a problem child that needed to be taught a lesson but the big bad officer smashing her into a concrete wall was excessive force and that cannot be denied.

If he had grabbed her, forced her to the ground and cuffed her, then we would not be having this debate or would he be facing any disciplinary actions even if she scuffed up her knees in the take down.

We don't know for certain whether the officer knew that she was her mother or not. He arrives on the scene and sees an older woman who has been assaulted at a centre for troubled youths. And an allegedly assaulted teacher inside. To boot she's leaving the scene. Do the math. At that point it's is not going to end well for her now is it.

As tboy states if this was a man doing the assaulting of his mother I sincerely doubt the bleeding hearts on here would have anything to say.

It would be interesting to hear the final outcomes of this situation.

1) what ends up happening with the officer,
2) did this scare the little hoodlum want to be straight,
3) does the mom and daughter still have any type of relationship

it would make for an interesting case study either way.

When dealing with any police officer the best policy is yes sir/mam no sir/mam and 99.9% of the time there is no confrontation. Officers face very volatile situations on a regular basis and when the adrenaline starts pumping it can lead to dangerous situations so the best policy is to be calm and nobody gets hurt.

Watch the video again, it was a tackle out of nowhere. There was no warning, no chance to comply. It looks like he could have just grabbed her arm and stopped her instead of slamming her into a brick wall.

There are limits to how much force the police are allowed to use in this kind of situation.
