? about spa employment

First off, didn't mean to hijack the thread. My bad.
Second~ R&R, I agree with most of the things you did say.
I agree that a uniform is professional and that spa employees should wear them. I just don't like monochromatic black. My personal prefrence.
I agree that the foot should be covered, in certian circumstances. I have worked barefoot previously, but I did get regular pedicures. It's a great way to show off the nail tech's abilities, right?(ps I don't work barefoot anymore)
Feet should be protected in the workplace, especially the stylists. I don't know how many times I have seen girls drop their tools ever so close to the tootsies.
As far as the hair care, I totally agree having the ability to recomend a client to a stylist in shop is the best form of advertisement. I do however believe in the trade system, paying only for product. Not what we were paying.
The largest problem I had was with the management and their "encouragement" and reasoning behind their rules. They were very condecending, rude, and gave silly reasons rather than reasons that had backing. (the flip flop thing comes to mind)

I thought I'd add this as a cross reference for those interested in uniforms. Thanks for the jumping off point, PremoMT.

Right now I wear scrubs, as I am minaly a clinical practice, but over the years, I've considered a stylish uniform. Male and female uniforms are included in this thread.

At the spa where I work, management makes the estheticians do massage rather than say no one is available and lose the $$. (We have 8 LMT's)

No one "makes" anyone do anything. Both participate by mutual consent.

You are implying that the customers can't tell the difference between an MT's massage and an Esty's massage. If they could, the spa would lose business, which is precisely what you claim the spa is trying to prevent by dragooning Esty's into doing massage.

I don't think the point of this thread was to dredge up every horror story of spa employment (I could fill a few pages with horror stories of spa employees).

I am not implying that clients can't tell the difference, I'm just stating what I've seen, I don't know what the outcome will be.

Meg, you're not off topic and you didn't imply anything that wasn't understood. Many people who work for a living have been pressured or coerced into handling duties they were not trained for*. R&R's perspective is from that of a business owner, not a massage practitioner, therefore he/she takes issue with any comment that reads as "business bias."

*(edited to add) Granted... it IS the responsibility of the person being pressured to speak up and refuse, but it is not unheard of for that person to feel as though their job is on the line nonetheless. Hard for me to judge someone harshly until I've walked in those shoes... with 80 percent of my feet covered, that is.
