I know this is quite an old thread but I have only just joined Healthy Pages and thought I would try and clear things up for anyone reading it, as I have done courses through Gateway with Claire in Richmond (who is now London Therapists and not through Gateway), with various other Gateway tutors, and I have also done courses with Annalisa Zisman (also in the Richmond area - overlooking the park as 'Rach M' mentioned previously). Annalisa was associated with Gateway for a short while last year (I think this is who 'peaceandtranquility' meant in the post above but called her Anna Lousie) but she now runs her own courses as Inspire Massage Workshops.

The Gateway workshops I did were OK I guess - I liked the small groups and I did find that you could learn a lot in a day that way, but to be honest I didn't find the tutors to be nearly as enthusiastic or inspiring as Annalisa. I came away from the workshop I did last year with Claire feeling less than confident about giving the treatments and I felt that she gave out the practitioners certificates too easily, just to get us out of the door before 4pm!

The workshop I did with Annalisa earlier this year on the other hand was wonderful (the natural lift facial massage/ natural 'face lift' massage... still not sure why the name keeps changing!) She is so passionate and in turn makes you feel passionate about the treatment and also she really helped my confidence as a therapist in general (I had only qualified a few months before and hadn't really had any experience). She also invited me back to attend the workshop a second time without paying any extra, because she said it was important that I was confident about the treatment before using it in my new therapy practice.

I love Annalisa's work ethic and commitment to turning out great therapists, rather than just taking the cash regardless of how well people have picked up the therapies, and she is also a fantiastic teacher so I would definitely recommend any of her courses - [link=http://www.inspiremassageworkshops.co.uk]www.inspiremassageworkshops.co.uk[/link]

Hi Jayney,

She sounds lovely I was suprised about your comments regarding your other course. I've done three courses with clare after a word-of-mouth recommendation and have loved each one. She also will let you come back do re-do the course for nothing if you don't feel confident enough after the class but I suppose she relys on you to tell her how you feel. My Indian Head Massage course lived up to the first two I did and I loved the way it was taught in really small groups.

To be honest, when I did the course with Claire, I did come away thinking it had been OK and I can't say how Claire would have reacted if I had told her how I felt about being rushed away early in the afternoon instead of spending more time nailing the moves of the routine.

It was the first workshop I did after qualifying and I wasn't very confident anyway. Also I didn't have anything to compare it to.

It wasn't until I had already done a few courses already that I found Annalisa.

I think it's only when you find someone truly wonderful that you realise what you want your standards to be! Now I would be reluctant to sign up for any other courses without a really reliable recommendation because I know how good they can be when they are good!

I'm really glad to hear you say that about Claire inviting you back though - she definitely didn't offer that to anyone on my course - maybe that was a Gateway policy though? Did you do your courses with Claire through Gateway or London Therapists?

Hi Janey,

I did all three courses through London Therapists after a friend recommended them. Their website says that you only get your certificate if the tutor feels that you're confident with the routine and that if not you can go back and re-do the course free of charge, and we were also told that on the day. I think it's great that you've found someone you really clicked with, as I think this is really important when you're learning something new. I feel the same way which is why I went back to Clare after my first class with her.

Sorry for long absence this is my daughters PC and i do not go on it much, she is far better on this than I ever will be!!

Yes I did attend the Natural lift facial massage course with Gateway workshops and attended in Clapham in london with a teacher called Marc Innes who i have to say was brilliant. We only had 4 people on the day and he was such a good teacher. He was very thorough and we got a great manual too, there was a therapist there who had done other facial masssage courses and she said this was far the best one she had attended. I cannot comment about that as this was the only one I have attended but i loved it! I thought marc was excellent and i loved the venue too i would highly recommend this course and my clients so far love the treatment and the best thing is that they really do see a difference and come back which has been great!

I have also gone to the carlton institute to do training in waxing and nails and they too like Gateway were very professional i guess i have been very lucky and chosen the right courses to go on. I want to do more training with both companies as they offer some great courses.

I have recommended Gateway recently to a friend of mine who went to do a hot stone massage course with a teacher called Helen in Herfordshire and she was really good, my friend is hard to please so i guess that is a good recommendation!

I did my waxing and nails course in Windsor with The Carlton institute and i have trained in london and Brighton with Gateway workshops and think both companies offer really professional courses which i have been really pleased with. The next on my list is the seated massage course and the thai foot massage courses with gateway and i may do make up with the carlton institute not sure yet.

I have a friend who did an ITEC course at inspire massage but did not complete it as she did not like her tutor and there has been worrying reports back from her and old class mates she has kept in touch with about the others who stayed on (even after buyling reports) that they could not take their exam as planned as the venue whichheld the course at was not registered with ITEC even though when she booked on her website it said it was! Apparneltly there was a police women on the course who said this was fraud and an investigation had to take place! Such as to say i decided to stay with the carlton institute and gateway and would not do any training withthis tutordue to bad reports i have heard. It is such a shame as they were lead to believe they would be able to take their exam in july and people had given up their jobs ready for this career change and had worked lined up and lost it due to not being able to take their exams and spent around £1.000 for the course - can you believe it! Not good i belive the class is very unhappy and ITEC has had many letters of complaint. It is so sad when someone in the industry lets down people in this way. I feel sorry for that class it must be really terrible for them.

I am still looking for a good shiatsu course not yet found one may look into reflexology there is so much to learn, so many wonderful therapies!

I would recommend doing a reflexology course that is accredited through the Association of Reflexology - either the Central London College of Reflexology in Covent Garden or the London School of Reflexology check out the schools on the AoR site http://www.aor.org.uk
for Shiatsu look on the Shiatsu Society site, http://www.shiatsusociety.org/public/index.shtml for accredited schools.
